Trade relations between the United States and Canada deteriorated over the weekend, with the US imposing 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports on Saturday, August 22, 2026. This action followed the collapse of trade negotiations, with both nations attributing blame to the other for the failure to reach an agreement. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Ottawa plans to implement retaliatory duties on US goods starting September 8, matching the US tariffs dollar for dollar. President Donald Trump accused Canada of seeking the benefits of a US state without being one.

In a separate development, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to announce a comprehensive package of sanctions against Iran on Monday, August 25, 2026. Bessent characterized these measures as the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary. Last week, Bessent indicated that the Trump administration’s strategy to weaken Iran’s economy would likely reduce the necessity for significant US military operations against the country. The administration has urged allies globally to cease business dealings with Iran, with Bessent emphasizing a choice between supporting or opposing the US stance. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, criticized these actions as an assertion of extraterritorial sovereignty over other United Nations members.

Domestically, US stock futures experienced a decline on Sunday as longer-dated Treasury yields resumed their upward trend on Friday, erasing much of the gains seen after the Treasury Department’s decision to expand government debt repurchases. The 30-year yield increased to 5.273%, and the benchmark 10-year yield climbed to approximately 4.734%. While US futures were lower, Asian markets showed mixed results, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 rising in early trading and South Korea’s Kospi declining.

In the technology sector, Anthropic, a creator of the Claude AI model, is preparing for its initial public offering (IPO). The company anticipates that public opposition to artificial intelligence and the construction of new data centers will be identified as a key risk factor in its IPO prospectus. Sources familiar with the matter indicate that Anthropic’s CFO, Krishna Rao, has been addressing questions from bankers and investors regarding competition, margin pressures from open-source models, and potential slowdowns in data center development during preliminary meetings.

Separately, a trial involving Meta could significantly alter social media platforms. The states are seeking a court order to compel Meta to remove what they describe as addictive design features from Instagram and Facebook, including infinite scrolling, autoplaying videos, disappearing content like Instagram Stories, beauty filters, and algorithm-driven feeds. An analyst at Forrester suggested that this trial could fundamentally change social media as it is currently known.
