The stock market experienced varied movements this week as investors reacted to new economic data and corporate announcements. On Tuesday, August 25, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both saw slight gains, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced more significantly, driven by a rally in semiconductor stocks.

The S&P 500 rose 0.32% to close at 7,677.28, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.66% to 26,151.30. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 160.24 points, or 0.3%, reaching 53,577.40, marking its third consecutive winning session. This occurred as Treasury yields fell for a second day, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield dropping over 7 basis points to 4.625%. West Texas Intermediate crude futures also decreased by more than 3% on Tuesday.

Semiconductor stocks rallied in anticipation of Nvidia’s earnings report, scheduled for release after the close on Wednesday. Shares of Nvidia were up 2%, breaking a seven-day decline. Advanced Micro Devices and Micron Technology also saw gains of 4.9% and 2.5%, respectively. However, consumer-focused companies lagged, with Dick’s Sporting Goods shares plunging 30% following disappointing results, marking its worst day on record. Other retailers like Walmart and Target also faced pressure, falling 1% and nearly 4%.

Investor sentiment was further impacted by a worse-than-expected consumer confidence reading for August, which moved to 89.4, down 0.8 points and below the Dow Jones consensus of 90.2. The expectations index, which measures the six-month outlook, slid 5.8 points to 68.2. Additionally, a worsening trade conflict between the U.S. and Canada emerged, with Canada announcing retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday. These tariffs, set to take effect on September 8, will apply to over 700 U.S. goods, including steel, aluminum, dairy, and seafood, with duties ranging from 15% to 50%.

In other market news, SpaceX shares rose over 2% on Tuesday after the company announced plans to invest up to $100 billion in a new launch facility in Louisiana, projected to create approximately 10,000 jobs. JPMorgan analysts expressed confidence in SpaceX’s AI capabilities, noting the acquisition of Cursor this month will strengthen its AI efforts. Bitcoin also extended its rally, surpassing the $80,000 mark in early Tuesday trading, reaching around $80,643, and gold prices rose to a three-month high, supported by a weaker U.S. dollar and Treasury bond buyback plans.
