# Greer Farmers Market Tops 25,000 Visitors in 11th Season

GREER, S.C. — More than 25,000 people came through the Greer Farmers Market during its 11th core season, which wrapped up in early October at Greer City Park in Greer.

The Sunday market ran from late April to Oct. 4, with hours from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and this year added three extra market days to stretch the season. Vendor rows grew too: an average of 50 local farmers, makers and bakers set up each week, compared with 40 a year earlier. Every vendor comes from within 50 miles of Greer.

Organizers also tried four new events, including a sidewalk chalk contest, pumpkin painting, a mushroom day and a day for painting outdoors in the park. Executive director Maggie Blair said all four should come back.

Children got a share of the produce as well. The market gave out close to 1,700 POP Club vouchers worth $5 apiece for fruit, vegetables, eggs or honey, and the money goes straight to market vendors.

The next date on the calendar is the yearly Chili Cookoff on Sunday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 12-acre park on East Poinsett Street. Tasting tickets cost $1 per contestant, with a People’s Choice vote and a judges’ award announced at 1:45 p.m. A Christmas Festival follows Dec. 5 and 6.
