PARK CITY, Kan. — President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a rally Monday just north of Wichita for Republican Sen. Roger Marshall, the latest stop in a midterm swing aimed at protecting the party’s narrow Senate majority in a state Republicans have long treated as safe.

Marshall, first sworn into the Senate in early 2021, is in an unexpectedly competitive race with Adam Hamilton, the Democratic nominee and a Methodist minister who founded the largest congregation in that denomination in the United States. Hamilton captured 35% of the vote to win an 11-way Democratic primary earlier this year, and his campaign says it set a quarterly fundraising record for the state.

Two major election forecasters have shifted the contest toward more competitive since Hamilton became the nominee, though Marshall is still seen as the favorite.

History is on the Republican side. The state’s voters last elected a Democratic senator in 1932, and it has been more than 50 years since a Democratic nominee finished within striking distance. Trump carried the state by more than 16 points in 2024.

Ahead of the trip, Trump posted on social media that he was going to Kansas to back Marshall, praising him as one of the best senators and calling Hamilton a fake who would be a disaster for the state.

Kansas voters also will choose a new governor in November. Term limits keep Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly off the ballot, and the open seat is being contested by Democrat Cindy Holscher and Republican Ty Masterson.

Election Day is Nov. 3. Vice President JD Vance is campaigning the same day in North Carolina.
