GREER, S.C. — People who drive, walk or bike in Greer get a chance Thursday to tell the city where its streets feel dangerous, as work continues on a plan meant to cut the number of crashes that kill or badly hurt people.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Oct. 22 and the session wraps up at 7, upstairs at City Hall, 301 E. Poinsett St. Visitors can look over the crash study, review the fixes being proposed and point out trouble spots near their homes.

The study looked only at the worst wrecks over five years, 2020 through 2024. Angle crashes, the T-bone type that happens at intersections, made up 44% of them. Drivers drifting out of their lanes accounted for another 28%, a pattern often linked to distraction and speed.

US 29 stood out, with 14 deadly or serious-injury wrecks, the highest count of any road ranked. Pedestrians and cyclists showed up in just 1% of all crashes yet 19% of the most serious ones.

Ideas on the table include protected left-turn signals, more roundabouts, rumble strips and better lighting. Consultants at Bolton & Menk are drafting the plan, with money from the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All program. Once finished, the report heads to Greer City Council, which would use it to start lining up money for projects.
