GREER, S.C. — The Greer Soup Kitchen has $2,000 more to work with as it heads into the Thanksgiving and Christmas rush, after United Community joined a surprise check presentation at the kitchen this week.

Executive Director Martha Bennett, who has run the kitchen for close to 18 years, said giving is down right now even as demand climbs. More than 100 people walk in on a typical day, many of them without a home, and she said the gift will stretch to about 2,000 meals.

The kitchen, part of Daily Bread Ministries, dates to 1990, when residents noticed neighbors in their own town going hungry. It takes no government money and runs on food and cash from families, churches and businesses, with roughly 125 volunteers a week from more than 50 congregations.

Lunch is served Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with Sunday supper from 4 to 5 p.m. The kitchen is at 521 E. Poinsett St., and the office can be reached at 864-968-0323.
