GREER, S.C. — The Greer Soup Kitchen is asking the community for help after a drop in donations, just weeks before it plans to serve a Thanksgiving meal to more than 100 low-income and homeless neighbors in Greer.

The kitchen, run by Daily Bread Ministries, keeps its doors open every day of the year. It depends entirely on gifts of food and money from residents, churches and businesses to keep operating.

On the shopping list for everyday meals: tea bags, sugar, canned peas and carrots, mayonnaise, cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soup, ground beef and turkey, cheese, sour cream and egg noodles. For the holiday, the ministry also wants corn bread, deer meat and buttermilk, along with socks for men and women.

The nonprofit started in 1990, when residents noticed people in their own town going without food. A single meal went out on its first day; the kitchen now serves more than 150 meals daily with help from about 125 volunteers a week drawn from more than 50 area churches.

Lunch is served Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a Sunday supper from 4 to 5 p.m. Donations of any size can be dropped off at the kitchen at 521 E. Poinsett Street, and the ministry can be reached at 864-968-0323.
