GREER, S.C. — The Lake Cunningham Fire Department will mark Fire Prevention Week in Greer, S.C., with its free Fire Day on Saturday, Oct. 10, turning the student parking lot at Blue Ridge High School into a hands-on lesson in fire safety.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school on Fews Chapel Road. Visitors can watch several live fire demonstrations that show how sprinkler systems save lives, and families can meet first responders during a helicopter landing demonstration.
Children will find a kids zone with games, fire hoses, bounce houses and a touch-a-truck area, along with a petting zoo. Food trucks and retail vendors will also be set up on the grounds.
Nearby Skyland Elementary is joining in with a fire truck coloring contest, offering cash and a ride on a fire engine as prizes.
Organizers said the goal of the day is to teach residents how to prevent fires and how to stay safe if one breaks out.
The department is based in Greer and covers 52 square miles from two fire stations. Along with responding to fires, medical calls, wrecks and hazardous situations around the clock, it handles fire prevention inspections, code enforcement and public education for the community it serves. More details are posted on the department’s social media pages.
