COLUMBIA, S.C. — Republicans held every South Carolina constitutional office on Tuesday’s ballot, led by Republican David Stumbo, who will step into the attorney general job that Governor-elect Alan Wilson is leaving.
Stumbo collected 1,058,525 votes, or 52.32%, to 963,645 votes, or 47.63%, for Democrat Richard Hricik, based on unofficial returns.
The closest of the down-ballot contests was for superintendent of education. Incumbent Ellen Weaver won a second term with 1,031,719 votes, or 50.98%, over Democrat Sylvia Wright, while United Citizens Party candidate Baba Amin Ojuok drew 15,482 votes. Weaver’s margin was much smaller than four years ago, when she took 55.52% in her first race, a high-water mark for a Republican in that race.
Two veterans also returned. Secretary of State Mark Hammond posted the strongest showing of any statewide Republican with 1,072,797 votes, or 52.99%, against Democrat Jason Belton. Treasurer Curtis Loftis won again with 1,061,819 votes, or 52.53%, over Democrat Vincent Coe.
Two offices change hands. Republican Mike Burkhold won comptroller general with 52.07% against Democrat Tiffany Boozer, and Republican Cody Simpson will be the next agriculture commissioner after taking 51.60% in a four-candidate field that included Democrat DeShawn Blanding.
Every winning margin in these races was under eight points. All results remain unofficial until the State Election Commission certifies them.
