GREENVILLE, S.C. — President Donald Trump is expected to make an Upstate campaign stop next Wednesday, Oct. 21, to boost Sen. Darline Graham in her race against Democrat Annie Andrews, according to Jeff Davis, who chairs the Greenville County Republican Party.
Graham, speaking at a Greenville news conference, described the trip as likely but stopped short of calling it final. Davis said in a written statement that the last details were still being settled.
Greenville County Sheriff Lewis said a candidate visit next week has been confirmed and is expected at a closed venue somewhere in the county. Several agencies will share security duties, he said, but specifics will stay private until the U.S. Secret Service signs off. Federal agents were expected to arrive by the end of this week.
Across the county line, Spartanburg County Sheriff Bill Rhyne has offered help as well, since the airport serving the region is his territory to patrol. Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, the Upstate’s commercial aviation hub, sits entirely within Greer city limits, so travelers and neighbors near GSP could see added security if the president flies in.
This would be Trump’s second South Carolina swing for Graham. He campaigned for her in Horry County in August. Greenville County was a weak spot for her in the special primary runoff, when she faced Congressman Ralph Norman and won under 40% of the county vote.
Early voting in South Carolina begins Oct. 19.
