GREER, S.C. — Greer High football has been handed a region win it did not earn on the scoreboard, and the ruling could reshape the top of Region 2-4A heading into the final week of the regular season.
The South Carolina High School League ordered Greenville High to give up the 61-28 result it posted against Greer on October 2nd after finding Greenville used an ineligible player. That early-October meeting opened region play for each school.
With the result flipped, Greer and Greenville both sit at 3-1 in region play, and Greer now owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Red Raiders. Greenville is 5-4 overall counting the forfeit.
Greenville is fighting the decision. Athletic director Mike Anderson said Monday that the school was still waiting to learn when the next step of its appeal would be heard, and that the forfeit does not affect its playoff eligibility.
The Yellow Jackets close the regular season at Riverside on Friday while Greenville travels to unbeaten region leader Gaffney. If Greer and Greenville both win, three teams could finish 4-1, and league tiebreakers would then turn to region points and RPI, where Greenville currently trails both Gaffney and Greer.
If the forfeit stands, Greenville could fall as low as the No. 3 seed in the 4A Upper State playoffs, which start next week.
