GREER, S.C. — A Greer city councilman has started a public campaign to bring a Trader Joe’s to Greer, and he wants residents to help by filling out the grocer’s online store request form.
Councilman Karuiam Booker made his case in a social media post this week. He pointed to the city’s spot between Greenville and Spartanburg, its BMW-anchored international workforce and a population that has climbed past 41,000, up nearly 47% since 2020, as reasons the chain should take a look.
For now, the whole Upstate has a single Trader Joe’s, the store at 59 Woodruff Industrial Lane in Greenville. The company lists only four South Carolina cities with a store: Columbia, Greenville, Mount Pleasant and Myrtle Beach.
Trader Joe’s has not announced a Greer location, and there is no application or approval on file. The company said it reviews every request sent through its website, but many factors decide where a new store goes, and it is looking at hundreds of neighborhoods around the country.
Booker framed the push as economic development, saying Greer should draw businesses that reflect the people who live there.
