GREER, S.C. — Greer hosted rival Greenville to open the state playoffs Friday night and saw its season end at Dooley Field, where the visitors won 38-28 in a Class 4A opening-round game.
Greenville built a 28-7 cushion before halftime, with its junior quarterback throwing three touchdown passes and running for another. Greer chipped away in the second half but could not close the gap.
The Greer defense got to the elusive Greenville passer for two sacks, and he finished 17 of 24 for 308 yards with no interceptions while adding 77 rushing yards on 12 carries.
Greer earned the home date after being awarded a 2-0 forfeit win over Greenville in the regular season, which lifted the Yellow Jackets ahead of the Red Raiders in the Region 1-4A standings. Greenville had won that October meeting 61-28 on the field before the result was overturned over an ineligible player.
Greer coach Will Young crossed to the Greenville sideline after the final whistle to congratulate the winners. Greer closes the year at 7-4.
Greenville, now 6-5, moves on to face a rested Westside team, 9-1 after sitting out the opening round, on the road on Nov. 13.
